Reviving a Community gem

Bowers School Farm is owned and operated by the Bloomfield Hills Schools and located in Bloomfield Township. The Farm is funded through the Bloomfield Hills School general fund, which is sourced by the state and provides teaching and learning services for students in the Bloomfield Hills Schools. Our top priority is to support our classroom teachers and the Bowers Academy, providing hands-on learning opportunities. Non-educational K-12 expenses must be provided by outside revenue, i.e., participants of community events.

Bloomfield Township does not currently have a recreation millage as our neighboring municipalities. In 1993, a Recreation Millage fund was established through Bloomfield Hills Schools by a voter-approved millage to purchase and maintain recreation facilities and to operate recreation programs. The millage was discontinued with the advent of Proposal A in 1994. Bloomfield Hills Schools continued to operate recreational programs, i.e. sledding hill and adjacent building, through the original fund until they were fully exhausted in the mid-2000’s.  Since that time, all recreational activities and maintenance of the area must be self funded.

After the mileage expired, our community stated that they wanted to expand community activities at the Farm. Through the support of in-kind donors, Bloomfield Hills Schools Foundation support, and sweat equity, we renovated the Farm Activity Building to give a warming space for visitors. We continually invest money in this recreation facility.

Since southeast Michigan has not received the snow totals like in years past, we put together an activity that doesn't require snow bringing snowless tubing to the hill. The overwhelming interest is unbelievable!

I would like to assure the community that we are doing our best to provide opportunities outside of our commitment to schools. That does require a fee for service to cover direct costs. I hope you can join me in supporting future activities that can bring people together and show them the incredible assets we have here in the Bloomfield community.

With gratitude,
